San Francisco is starting today with mostly clear skies and cool readings in the low 50s, about 53°F, with a quick warm-up on the way. Highs are forecast around 71°F for today, with plenty of sunshine and a light southwest breeze through the afternoon.
Afternoon Winds Pick Up
Winds stay on the tame side early, then ramp up through midday and into the afternoon as the marine influence backs off. Look for southwest-to-west breezes generally in the 5 to 12 mph range across the city, with the usual stronger gusts on exposed hilltops and along the immediate waterfront.
Weekend Marine And Fire Concerns
The bigger story lands tomorrow into the weekend, when an offshore push brings gusty winds, rough seas and elevated fire-weather concerns. Gale warnings and small craft advisories are in place for much of the central coast and Monterey Bay, with seas building to roughly 12 to 19 feet and peak gusts exceeding 30 mph, and up to 40 to 50 mph through coastal gaps and ridgelines. Daytime humidities could drop into the 15 to 25% range inland, bumping up fire danger, according to the National Weather Service.
What This Means For Plans
If you had weekend plans on the water, it is a good time to rethink them. Mariners and small-boat operators should avoid nonessential trips, and beachgoers should expect dangerous surf and strong rip currents. On land, secure loose patio furniture, skip ridge-top hikes during the gustiest periods, and be extra careful with any outdoor burning, since the combination of wind and low humidity will limit overnight recovery.
Timing And Temperatures
Temperatures hold above normal into next week, with tomorrow near 74°F, a cooler Saturday around 69°F, next Sunday near 73°F, and a warmer push into the low 80s by next Monday. Overnight lows stay mainly in the low to mid 50s.
