An overnight incident inside the residential facilities at the Indiana School for the Deaf in Indianapolis is now under investigation by Indiana State Police, according to the school. Administrators say they have notified families of the students directly affected and reported the situation to state authorities while the inquiry moves forward.
In a May 8 letter to parents, school leaders referenced “an incident that occurred overnight in the residential facilities” and said they had contacted the Indiana State Police as well as the Department of Child Services. WISH-TV reported that its I-Team confirmed an investigation is underway.
Kim Kause said in an email to WISH-TV that “we are limited in the information we can share while an investigation is ongoing.” According to the station’s report, Indiana State Police also did not release additional details.
About the school
The Indiana School for the Deaf is a state-run K–12 school with dormitories on its Indianapolis campus and lists campus contact information on its official website (Indiana School for the Deaf). The IUPUI University Library notes the school serves roughly 342 students on campus, with about 60 percent living at the school during the academic year.
What DCS involvement could mean
Because the school said it notified the Indiana Department of Child Services, the agency could open an Institutional Child Protection Services assessment and has the authority to request facility records as part of its review. DCS policy also sets quick response timelines for serious allegations, in some cases requiring the agency to begin its work within two hours, depending on the nature of reported injuries or risks, according to DCS practice guidance.
What’s next
Investigations by state police and DCS typically remain confidential while they are active, and the school says it is cooperating with authorities and has reached out to the families directly involved. Officials have not released further information publicly, and any new details are likely to come only when investigators or the school determine they can share more.
