The final autopsy on 18-year-old Traevion Pirtle confirms what many in Indianapolis feared, multiple blunt-force injuries to his head, neck and trunk, including brain and skeletal trauma. Yet despite the severity of those wounds, the Marion County coroner has listed his manner of death as "undetermined," and the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department has closed its investigation based on those findings and the information it had already gathered.
Toxicology testing is finished, but the detailed report will stay under wraps. It will not be released to the public, although Pirtle's family is allowed to request its full contents.
Coroner Details, Toxicology and a Closed Case
The Marion County Coroner’s Office documented extensive brain and skeletal trauma and concluded that examiners could not identify a clear manner of death, according to the Indianapolis Star. In other words, medical staff could not say whether Pirtle died naturally, accidentally, by suicide or by homicide.
The coroner also noted that toxicology work is complete, but the full findings will not be made public. Family members, however, can still request their own copies from the office. The Indianapolis Star reports that IMPD has brought its investigative file in line with the coroner's conclusions and has closed the case, unless new evidence surfaces.
From Missing Teen to Tragic Discovery
Pirtle was last seen on March 7 in the 3600 block of Cedar Pine Lane and was reported missing to IMPD the next day, March 8. Nearly a week later, on the evening of March 13, officers found an unresponsive male inside a cellular tower enclosure in the 10500 block of East 38th Street near Fervent Prayer Ministries. Search teams had already been sweeping the area using K9 units and drones as part of a community-led effort to find him, according to WRTV. That discovery triggered an immediate death investigation and formal identification by the coroner's office.
Investigators Weigh a Possible Fall From the Tower
According to the Marion County report, investigators told the coroner that Pirtle's pattern of blunt-force injuries to the head, neck and trunk could be consistent with a fall from a significant height near a radio tower that rises hundreds of feet, as reported by the Indianapolis Star. That assessment stops short of any public declaration that his death was accidental or intentional.
Investigators have not released additional details explaining how Pirtle ended up inside the fenced tower site, and there has been no public ruling that points to any specific scenario.
What ‘Undetermined’ Really Means, and What Could Change
In death investigations, an "undetermined" manner of death generally indicates that, even after a full autopsy and review of the circumstances, medical experts cannot say with certainty whether the death was natural, accidental, suicidal or homicidal. That guidance on death certification comes from the National Center for Biotechnology Information.
Unless new information comes in, the coroner's undetermined finding and IMPD's decision to close the case will remain in place. Pirtle's relatives can still obtain the toxicology results directly from the coroner's office.
Family members and community volunteers who searched for Pirtle say they are frustrated by how many questions remain and hope investigators will revisit any available surveillance footage or witness tips, according to WRTV.
