Security at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport got an unwelcome stress test Monday morning, when police say a man slipped past TSA screening before being tracked down in Concourse T and taken into custody. According to Atlanta police, officers with the department’s airport unit arrested the man after he pushed through the security area with his belongings. Investigators charged him with obstruction, simple battery and avoiding security measures, and he was booked into the Clayton County Jail.
Arrest and charges
Authorities identified the suspect as Temidayo Oloruntoba and say he “got past TSA security and pushed through Concourse T with his belongings” before airport officers detained him. Members of the Atlanta Police Department’s airport unit processed the arrest and filed charges of obstruction, simple battery and avoiding-security-measures.
Channel 2 Action News reported that Oloruntoba was still being held Tuesday afternoon at the Clayton County Jail and that the station has submitted an open-records request for airport surveillance video related to the incident, according to WSB-TV.
Not the first time
This is not the first recent security headache at ATL. In late October, surveillance footage captured a man identified as Fabian Leon sprinting through a main TSA lane before a bystander tackled him, according to CBS News Atlanta.
Earlier in October, authorities arrested another man after relatives reported that he had livestreamed threats allegedly describing plans to attack the terminal, as reported by Patch.
Who polices the airport
The Atlanta Police Department’s Airport Section is responsible for policing inside the terminals and works in coordination with the Department of Aviation, the Federal Aviation Administration and the Transportation Security Administration. The unit conducts regular patrols, deploys explosive-detection K-9 teams and provides other airport-specific security services aimed at securing concourses and parking areas, according to the Atlanta Police Department.
Why breaches matter
Breaches of secure areas, whether at perimeter fences or at checkpoint lanes, underline potential gaps in detection and response that officials have repeatedly flagged. The Government Accountability Office has called for updated risk assessments for airport perimeters and access control systems, and a 2016 investigation found dozens of perimeter intrusions at major U.S. airports, according to the GAO and a 2016 AP investigation.
Legal next steps
Oloruntoba faces the criminal counts announced by investigators and will move through the Clayton County court system. Information about his arraignment or any additional filings was not included in the initial report and is expected to appear in court records once it becomes available.
For travelers
Travelers passing through ATL are advised to build in extra time, follow TSA checkpoint rules and comply with airline guidance. Passengers should check flight status directly with their carriers and review Hartsfield-Jackson’s passenger information page for official updates and alerts. For formal advisories and traveler guidance, the airport’s passenger information center on the Hartsfield-Jackson website remains the primary source of official information.
