Florida prosecutors say a trio of alleged thieves turned hardware aisles into their personal shopping lanes, announcing Wednesday that three people have been charged in what they describe as an organized retail theft ring that hit stores across the state. Martin County detectives report that a local burglary case in Stuart quickly ballooned into a multi-county investigation, focused on high-end tools that were allegedly stolen, hauled south and resold in Miami-Dade. Officials say the ring left behind thousands of dollars in damage and racked up hundreds of thousands in losses for businesses, with one suspect still on the run and two others now facing charges.
From Stuart Break-In To Statewide Operation
According to investigators, the crew relied on smash-and-grab style tactics, targeting pricey tools, tossing them into large bins, then walking out before staff could react. Among the businesses allegedly hit were Ferguson Waterworks, Grainger, Electric City and Sewell's Hardware, with incidents stretching across at least 13 counties. Prosecutors say the stolen merchandise was then transported to Miami-Dade County to be sold off. "This group of criminals carefully orchestrated thefts across at least thirteen counties to turn over illicit proceeds as quickly as possible," Attorney General James Uthmeier said in a release, according to the Attorney General's Office.
Who Is Accused And Where They Are Now
As reported by CBS12, the Attorney General's Office identified the suspects as 19-year-old Johnny Batista, 31-year-old Roberto Aldana Ferrera and 39-year-old Roberto Hernandez-Castro. Batista is currently being held in the Palm Beach County Jail. Aldana Ferrera is facing local charges in Georgia and is expected to be extradited to Florida once those cases are resolved. Hernandez-Castro, authorities say, remains at large and is the subject of an active arrest warrant.
Charges, Prosecutors And What Comes Next
Prosecutors have stacked the case with serious counts, charging the three with racketeering, conspiracy to commit racketeering, multiple counts of burglary and grand theft, possession of burglary tools and related offenses. The Office of Statewide Prosecution led the investigation in coordination with the Martin County Sheriff's Office. Senior Assistant Statewide Prosecutor Chris Olowin is set to handle the case in the Nineteenth Judicial Circuit, according to the Attorney General's Office.

If convicted as charged, the defendants could face up to life in the Florida Department of Corrections, according to CBS12. Prosecutors say the scope of the case underscores what they allege was a coordinated resale operation that moved stolen goods across county lines, elevating it far beyond a simple shoplifting spree.
