A day of fishing at Baker Beach turned life-or-death yesterday when a powerful sneaker wave swept a man offshore in the Presidio, leaving him in critical condition. San Francisco Fire Department crews raced to the scene, reached him in the water, and paramedics provided advanced life support before rushing him to a local hospital. The close call is another stark reminder of how quickly Pacific-facing beaches can turn dangerous, even when the ocean looks relatively calm.
According to ABC7 Bay Area, firefighters responded at about 1 PM after 911 callers reported that the man had been knocked off his footing while fishing along the shoreline. Crews reportedly reached him within minutes, and medics continued advanced life support as they transported him in critical condition.
What Is A Sneaker Wave?
The National Weather Service had a Beach Hazards Statement in effect for Pacific-facing beaches on Friday, warning of a higher risk from a long-period northwest swell. The National Weather Service notes that sneaker waves can suddenly surge far past the normal tide line and hit without warning, turning rocks and wet sand into particularly hazardous spots for anyone near the water.
Rescue And Safety Guidance
The San Francisco Fire Department and park ocean-rescue teams stress a few simple rules for staying out of trouble along the coast: avoid standing on wet sand and rocks, keep children and pets well back from the surf, and never turn your back on the ocean. Their coastal safety tips also warn that even shallow water can be deadly if a strong wave or rip current hits. Officials urge bystanders to call 911 instead of attempting an untrained rescue, and to throw a flotation device if one is available rather than going into the water.
Recent Coastal Incidents
The Baker Beach emergency follows a run of dangerous incidents on San Francisco’s west-facing shoreline. A surfer who was pulled from the water at Ocean Beach on Thursday later died at the hospital, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Officials say the recent swell, combined with strong rip currents, has made conditions especially treacherous along the city’s coastal stretches.
Authorities are urging anyone visiting the Presidio shoreline to give the surf a wide berth, to call 911 immediately if a person is swept into the water, and to keep visual contact with the victim until trained crews arrive. Officials say they will release more information on the Baker Beach incident as it becomes available.
