A quick stop at a South Elgin Speedway turned into a seven-figure surprise for a Northwest suburban Chicago woman on Wednesday, after a $50 scratch-off ticket in the parking lot revealed a $1 million prize. The Illinois Lottery confirmed the win. The player has chosen to stay anonymous, using the name Rosalina Galaxy, and told officials she plans to travel and buy a new home.
According to FOX 32 Chicago, she bought a $10 Million Bankroll instant ticket at the Speedway at 1775 N. La Fox St. only after her first choice of ticket was sold out. She scratched the ticket in the parking lot, saw the seven-figure result, and said she "was in complete shock" when she realized what she was holding. She added that she and her husband, both self-described Nintendo fans, may celebrate with a trip to Nintendo World in Florida and a tropical cruise.
Which ticket paid out
The winning ticket was from the Illinois Lottery’s $10,000,000 Bankroll instant game, a $50 ticket that features multiple seven-figure prizes and a detailed prize structure. The state’s official game page lists the ticket, its price, and play details for players checking odds and remaining top prizes, according to the Illinois Lottery.
Retailer bonus and statewide numbers
The Speedway that sold the winning ticket will receive a 1 percent selling bonus, or $10,000, a standard perk for retailers that sell big winners, according to Lottery materials. FOX 32 Chicago also reported the Illinois Lottery’s statement that more than 20 million Instant Tickets have paid out in Illinois so far this year, totaling about $563 million in prizes.
How winners claim
The Illinois Lottery advises winners to sign the back of their ticket, store it in a safe place, and contact the Lottery to start the claims process. Prizes above $10,000 typically require an appointment at a Claim Center. The Lottery’s public winners page outlines the required steps, documentation, and contact information for claiming larger instant-ticket prizes, according to the Illinois Lottery.
The South Elgin score is one of several recent seven-figure scratch-off wins in the region. Hoodline recently highlighted a similar $1 million instant-ticket win in Rockford in April. See Rockford gas station $1M win for that earlier report.
