A 26-year-old man is fighting for his life after being shot in the face while driving on Chicago's South Side late Sunday night, police said. The gunfire erupted around 10:20 p.m. in the 7900 block of South Western Avenue. The driver was rushed to a hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

According to ABC7 Chicago, the victim told officers he heard gunfire outside his vehicle, then suddenly felt pain. He was taken to Advocate Christ Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. Area One detectives have taken over the case, the station reported.
Another flashpoint on Western Avenue
Police have released a few details about a possible suspect or motive. The same stretch of Western Avenue has already seen multiple shootings this year, including a bloody Jan. 9 night. That violence left a teenager dead and several others wounded, according to CBS Chicago. Residents and business owners along the long north–south corridor have repeatedly voiced frustration about recurring violence on their doorstep.

Chicago police did not immediately provide a suspect description, and no arrests had been announced as of Sunday night. Area One detectives are asking anyone who witnessed the shooting or who has surveillance video from around 79th and Western to contact investigators.
