A 47-year-old man was killed Tuesday night in West Englewood after someone in an SUV opened fire on him while he stood outside on the South Side, according to Chicago police. The shooting happened in the 1400 block of West 71st Street at about 8:38 p.m.
Police said the victim was standing outside when an SUV pulled up and someone inside started shooting, hitting him in the chest and abdomen. He was taken in critical condition to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he later died.
Gunfire On 71st Street
After the shots were fired, the SUV continued eastbound on 71st Street and kept going. No one was in custody as of Tuesday night, according to details reported by the Chicago Sun-Times.
Citywide Numbers Ticking Up
The killing comes as Chicago is seeing an uptick in gun violence this year compared with 2025, according to Chicago Police Department data reported by WTTW. The outlet notes there were 32 homicides in April, a 39% increase from April 2025, and 130 homicides through the first four months of 2026.
Investigation Ongoing
Police did not immediately release the victim’s name, and the department had not announced any arrests as of Tuesday night, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. Detectives are continuing to investigate the shooting in the 1400 block of West 71st Street.
