What was supposed to be a milestone moment for Thornwood High School seniors in South Holland turned into a scene of chaos on Sunday when a fight broke out among attendees on the school's football field. As graduates lined up to hear their names called, a physical altercation erupted, sending some seniors and their families scrambling for the exits and forcing police to move in.
Video from the ceremony shows people sprinting across the field and throwing punches, including one person still wearing a cap and gown, as the crowd scatters in different directions. According to CBS News, many graduates chose to leave after the brawl started. Police detained several people at the scene, but no one was arrested or charged. No serious injuries were reported, and the ceremony ultimately continued.
Where It Happened
The commencement was held on the Thornwood High School football field. The school is located at 17101 S. Park Ave. in South Holland, and the district's event listing shows Thornwood's graduation was scheduled for Sunday afternoon, per Thornton Township High School District 205.
Officials And Families Respond
South Holland city leaders confirmed that "a physical altercation occurred among a group of attendees" and called the disruption "disheartening" on a night meant to honor students. The village added, "We are grateful that the situation was resolved quickly and without serious incident." Still, some parents told reporters they did not feel safe staying at the event, even with security present, according to CBS News.
Aftermath
Organizers resumed the ceremony after the commotion, but videos from the scene show many students and guests had already left the stands and the field. At least some families opted not to wait around for diplomas. The melee left an uneasy note hanging over what should have been a purely celebratory night for the Class of 2026.
