Utah parents eyeing state help for private school tuition or home-based learning are staring down a hard deadline: New families have until Friday, May 1, at 11:59 p.m. MT to apply for the Utah Fits All scholarship program. The scholarships can cover up to $8,000 per child for private-school tuition or approved educational services. Lawmakers recently bumped up funding for the coming school year, expanding the number of awards and raising the stakes for families planning next fall. Program officials and advocates are urging parents to confirm eligibility and cutoffs before hitting submit.
Who gets what, and who is first in line
The Utah Fits All program uses a tiered setup. Home-based students ages 5 to 11 are eligible for $4,000, those ages 12 to 18 can receive $6,000, and full-time private-school students can qualify for up to $8,000. Awards are not handed out on a first-come, first-served basis. Returning students are at the front of the line, followed by their siblings, then families at or below 300% of the federal poverty level. Any remaining spots are filled from the wider pool of applicants. The full breakdown is posted by Utah Education Fits All.
How families pay providers and get reimbursed
Scholarship dollars are handled through the program manager’s online platform, which runs a marketplace of approved education providers. Those vendors can be paid directly from a student’s account, so parents are not fronting money for every service.
There is also a pre-approval and reimbursement process for items or services that are not already listed on the marketplace. Parents can request approval before they buy, then submit documentation for repayment, which helps avoid getting stuck with a purchase that does not qualify. Step-by-step instructions for purchases, pre-approvals, and reimbursements are laid out by Odyssey.
Key dates parents need to watch
New families must complete their applications by May 1 at 11:59 p.m. Returning students get a bit more breathing room, with a reapplication deadline of May 31. Scholarship awards are scheduled to be announced June 16, and families who are selected must accept their award by June 30 for funds to be available at the start of the new scholarship year.
These dates and timelines were highlighted in recent local coverage. KSL reported on the approaching deadline and award schedule.
Where the money came from, and the ongoing court fight
During recent legislative action, lawmakers added roughly $20 million to Utah Fits All, bringing the total appropriation for the upcoming school year to about $120 million, according to program organizers. That funding boost and several technical adjustments were rolled into HB 455, which was signed into law by Gov. Spencer Cox. The timing and signing are outlined in materials from the governor’s office, including a release from the Governor's Office.
The program is still tied up in litigation. A district judge struck down portions of the law last year, and state officials have appealed. The scholarship program has been allowed to continue operating while the Utah Supreme Court considers the case, according to Deseret News.
How to apply and where to get help
Families submit applications through the program manager’s online portal and can get assistance through Odyssey’s Utah support line and help center. The Utah State Board of Education’s Fits All page includes the program timeline and directs families to Odyssey for customer service and application guidance.
