Two separate shootings rattled Washington, D.C., on Monday night, unfolding just minutes apart and on opposite sides of the city. Within roughly a quarter of an hour, gunfire was reported first in the 200 block of 50th Street NE, then in the 2500 block of Georgia Avenue NW near Howard University, leaving two men injured.
Police response and victims
The Metropolitan Police Department told DC News Now that officers found a man suffering from gunshot wounds at the 50th Street NE scene and another man who had been shot along Georgia Avenue NW. In both cases, police say the victims were conscious and breathing when officers arrived. Investigators are treating the incidents as separate shootings that happened within about 15 minutes of each other.
Police ask for tips
According to the Metropolitan Police Department, anyone who saw what happened or has video from either location is urged to call (202) 727-9099 or text tips to 50411. The department says the anonymous line is monitored around the clock, and information provided could be eligible for a reward as detectives sort through leads.
Suspect description and status
DC News Now reported that MPD initially circulated a description of a possible suspect, a male seen wearing a white tank top, black pants and a black hat. The department later said there was no active lookout in connection with the shootings. As of now, police have not announced any arrests or publicly identified a suspect.
Georgia Avenue corridor context
That stretch of Georgia Avenue has been a flashpoint in neighborhood safety discussions this year. A recent report titled Man Killed On Georgia Avenue highlighted an April fatal shooting on the corridor and renewed calls from residents and community leaders for more patrols and violence-prevention work. Monday night’s incident adds another case to a growing list that police are still working through.
Detectives are again urging anyone who witnessed either shooting or captured video to contact the Metropolitan Police Department’s anonymous tip line at (202) 727-9099 or by texting 50411, as listed by the department. Officers continue to process both scenes and follow up on information as the parallel investigations remain active.
