A late-night crash on the westbound I-70 ramp from U.S. 40 near the Indiana–Ohio state line took a grim turn Wednesday when deputies discovered a woman dead inside a semitrailer. What started as a big-rig wreck quickly turned into a possible homicide investigation, with officers from Wayne County, Indiana, and Preble County, Ohio, treating the scene as far more than a routine traffic fatality. The truck's driver was later found at a travel center on U.S. 40 West and taken into custody after resisting arrest, officials said.
Wayne County deputies were the first to respond to the ramp crash and soon requested help from the Preble County Sheriff's Office. The woman was rushed from the scene to Reid Hospital in Richmond, where she was pronounced dead. Her body was then transported to the Miami Valley Regional Crime Laboratory in Dayton for a forensic autopsy and formal identification. Wayne County Coroner R. Brent Meadows said there is evidence the woman "was killed in a foul play incident" and that she did not die as a result of the crash itself. Deputies later located the truck driver at a nearby travel center; he was taken into custody after resisting and transported to a local hospital for treatment, according to WIBC.
How the Investigation Is Proceeding
Detectives from both counties, along with crime-scene units, combed the ramp and surrounding areas, gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses and passing motorists who were in the vicinity of the crash. The woman's remains were sent to the Miami Valley Regional Crime Laboratory for a full forensic autopsy and additional testing. Federal grant records indicate that the facility serves as a regional forensic partner for complex investigations, according to the National Institute of Justice.
Reid Health's main campus in Richmond is the area's primary hospital and emergency center, and first responders regularly bring critically injured patients there from incidents along I-70 and U.S. 40. In this case, the hospital became the first stop in what is now a multi-agency death investigation.
Legal Outlook and Next Steps
No criminal charges had been announced at the time of the initial reporting. Prosecutors typically wait for autopsy findings and lab results before deciding whether to file charges, and officials in both states appear to be following that pattern here.
The Wayne County Coroner's Office and both sheriff's departments are continuing to investigate and have said they will release additional details as identities are confirmed and next investigative steps are set. Authorities are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or noticed activity on or near the westbound I-70 ramp from U.S. 40 on Wednesday night to contact local law enforcement.
