What started as a routine shoplifting call on San Antonio’s West Side Saturday night quickly spiraled into a violent confrontation, leaving one man injured and a suspect facing a robbery charge. Police say the victim’s injuries were not life-threatening, and officers detained both people involved before booking the suspect.

According to WOAI, officers were called around 7:23 p.m. to the 200 block of Castroville Road for a reported fight. Investigators say a man walked into a business, tried to leave with unpaid merchandise, and was confronted by another man who told him to hand the items back. Police say the suspect allegedly tossed one of the items back toward the man, then hit him with a rock. Officers stepped in, separated the two, and detained them at the scene.

When shoplifting turns violent

San Antonio has seen several theft incidents tip into violence lately. In May, Hoodline reported a North Side case where a clerk was beaten after an alleged grab-and-go, a reminder that trying to stop a suspected shoplifter can come with real risks for workers and bystanders alike.

What the law says

Under Texas law, causing bodily injury “in the course of committing theft” can be charged as robbery, a second-degree felony under Texas Penal Code §29.02, according to Justia. If the assault during a theft involves a deadly weapon or results in serious bodily injury, prosecutors can seek an aggravated robbery charge under §29.03, per Justia.

How to help

The San Antonio Police Department’s Robbery Task Force is asking anyone with information or surveillance footage to contact detectives at 210-207-0300 or call the department’s non-emergency line at 210-207-7273, according to the City of San Antonio. Tipsters can also reach Crime Stoppers at 210-224-STOP (7867) or submit information through the P3 Tips app, per Crime Stoppers of San Antonio.

As reported by WOAI, the suspect was booked on a robbery charge, and police say the investigation is still active. Detectives have not publicly released the suspect’s name or further details and are urging anyone with additional video or information to come forward.
