Chicago police say a long-running homicide investigation in Gage Park has finally led to an arrest. Jesus Vargas, 28, was taken into custody in Chicago on Friday and charged in connection with the 2018 shooting death of a 21-year-old man in the Southwest Side neighborhood.
The killing happened on Oct. 20, 2018, in the 2700 block of West 58th Street. Vargas is now facing one felony count of first-degree murder, along with two additional felony counts tied to the issuance of a warrant, according to authorities. His next court appearance is scheduled for Sunday.
Arrest and charges
The Chicago Police Department identified Vargas as the suspect and said officers arrested him on Friday, FOX 32 Chicago reported. Police told the outlet that Vargas has been charged with one felony count of first-degree murder and two felony counts related to the warrant, all stemming from the 2018 case.
Backstory on the 2018 slaying
Local coverage at the time detailed a late-night shooting on Oct. 20, 2018, that left a 21-year-old man mortally wounded in Gage Park. The Chicago Sun-Times identified the victim as Juan Cruz and reported that he was shot while driving, then taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he later died.
The Sun-Times also noted that prosecutors previously pursued other suspects in the case, including a 2019 charging of a man named Mario Vargas, showing that investigators have followed multiple leads over the years. Those earlier accounts laid out the original scene details and timeline of the 2018 homicide.
What’s next
Authorities say Vargas is expected in court on Sunday as the case moves toward arraignment and prosecutors work through formal filings, according to FOX 32 Chicago. Police have released the basic information on the charges, and more details are likely to surface as the court proceedings get underway.
