Two men are behind bars after a months-old homicide in a Spring Valley motorhome, ending a long stretch in which the case loomed over the neighborhood without any arrests.
Earlier this month, detectives arrested Adrian Garcia, 28, and Issac Santana, 26, on suspicion of killing Ruben Cervantes. Both were booked into San Diego Central Jail after being taken into custody. Homicide Lt. Juan Maruquez told investigators the deadly assault happened inside a motorhome on Sweetwater Road just east of Orville Street, and an autopsy found that Cervantes died from injuries suffered in that attack. The arrests followed additional work by the Sheriff’s homicide unit, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune.
Victim and timeline
The victim, 53-year-old Ruben Cervantes, was identified in an online obituary that listed his date of death as Jan. 23, 2025, as reported by Dignity Memorial. Friends and relatives have not publicly commented on the recent arrests.
Investigation and next steps
Sheriff’s homicide detectives say Garcia and Santana remain in custody while investigators continue building the case. Prosecutors are expected to review the evidence and decide on formal charges. A possible motive has not been released, and detectives are still urging anyone with information to contact the Homicide Unit, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune.
Local context
The arrests come more than a year after the attack and land at a time when county officials are trying to curb violence in Spring Valley. County supervisors recently signed off on funding for the "No Shots Fired" street-level violence-prevention effort in the area, a program aimed at reducing retaliatory shootings and steering people toward services, according to Hoodline.
