A 36-year-old woman was killed Friday afternoon after a street fight in Humboldt Park exploded into gunfire at Chicago Avenue and Homan Avenue. Police said officers responded around 3:35 p.m. to the 3400 block of West Chicago Avenue, where they found the woman with multiple gunshot wounds to the chest. She was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital and later died. A 27-year-old woman was detained at the scene, and officers recovered a firearm, according to CBS Chicago.
Police told CBS Chicago that the two women, ages 27 and 36, were in a physical fight on the street when the younger woman pulled out a gun and opened fire. The victim was hit several times in the chest before being rushed to the hospital.
Neighborhood context
The killing lands in the middle of a rough stretch for Humboldt Park and other West Side blocks this year. Coverage of a separate Humboldt Park brawl earlier in June detailed another fight that erupted into gunfire, and WTTW reported on a controversial police-involved shooting in the neighborhood this spring that drew intense scrutiny. Residents and local organizations have repeatedly called for long-term violence-interruption efforts and more community resources focused on the blocks that see the most trouble.
Investigation and charges
Chicago police said Area Four detectives are handling the case. The 27-year-old suspect was taken into custody at the scene, and a gun was recovered. As of Friday evening, no charges had been announced and the investigation was ongoing, according to CBS Chicago.
Authorities have not released the names of either woman. Anyone with information is urged to contact Chicago police or submit an anonymous tip, Hoodline notes.
