A 65-year-old man was killed Friday night after he was hit by an SUV while crossing South Military Trail outside a designated crosswalk in Greenacres, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. The crash happened around 8:41 p.m. on May 29 near Forest Hill Boulevard. The man, identified by authorities as John Gray Digregorio, was thrown into the outside northbound lane and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Crash details and investigation
Investigators with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Division told WPTV that Digregorio left the center median and ran mid-block across the northbound lanes instead of using a nearby crosswalk, and they concluded he failed to yield the right of way. A northbound 2024 Toyota RAV4 struck him, with the impact carrying him onto the SUV’s hood and windshield before he was thrown back into the roadway. The driver, identified as 35-year-old Luis Montalban of Pahokee, was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured, officials said.
Where it happened and local patterns
The intersection where Forest Hill Boulevard meets South Military Trail has been cited as one of Palm Beach County’s most crash-prone spots, according to planners and reporting by WPBF. That corridor has seen other recent fatalities. Earlier this spring a bicyclist was killed in a Greenacres hit-and-run, authorities told WFLX. Local transportation officials say wide, fast arterial roads like Military Trail tend to concentrate both traffic and danger, and planners are weighing changes to make the corridor safer.
What’s next
The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Division is continuing to investigate the fatal collision, and no charges have been announced, WPTV reported. Officials are urging extra caution on busy corridors like Military Trail and reminding residents to use marked crossings and obey signals, especially after dark.
