A predawn collision between a passenger car and a semi-truck in west Phoenix turned deadly early Monday, shutting down a busy intersection and launching a full-scale police investigation. The crash happened around 2 a.m. near 51st Avenue and Van Buren Street, where crews arrived to find a white Kia wedged beneath the larger rig and heavy damage concentrated on the driver’s side of the smaller car.
According to Arizona's Family, a Phoenix police sergeant at the scene confirmed at least one person had died in the wreck. The semi-truck driver stayed on site and spoke with investigators, while news crews described the Kia as extensively damaged as detectives worked methodically to document the scene and gather evidence.
Investigation and traffic impact
The Phoenix Police Department’s media advisories note that the area near 51st Avenue and Van Buren Street has seen multiple fatal and serious-injury collisions in recent years, a track record that often leads officers to keep lanes closed for extended evidence collection. As outlined by the Phoenix Police Department, investigators typically take detailed measurements, photograph wreckage and debris, and reconstruct the crash before reopening major intersections.
Officials have not yet released the victim’s name or announced a cause of the crash, and detectives remained at the intersection gathering evidence, as reported by Arizona's Family. Drivers were urged to steer clear of the area and use alternate routes while crews worked to tow the damaged vehicles and clear debris, and anyone with information about the collision is asked to contact Phoenix police.
