Police in New Orleans are probing a mysterious death in the Lake Terrace/Lake Oaks area after officers and members of the dive team rushed to the 1800 block of Lakeshore Drive on Sunday afternoon. The call came in around 3:19 p.m., and crews stayed at the lakefront as investigators worked to determine how to classify the incident. Authorities have not released any information about the victim or how the person died.
What police said
According to WDSU, the New Orleans Police Department said "the call stated that someone was drowning at the location," prompting officers, the NOPD dive team and other support units to respond. As of that report, police had not shared any additional details about what they found or how they planned to classify the case.
Earlier searches along Lakeshore Drive
Just days earlier, local crews had been searching Lake Pontchartrain after a passerby reported seeing a person jump into the water near the 8000 block of Lakeshore Drive, FOX 8 reported. Officers said that nighttime search did not turn up anyone in the water.
Recovery and coroner
A body was later pulled from Lake Pontchartrain during the broader search effort, WBRZ reported. The Orleans Parish Coroner's Office is expected to perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death and confirm the person’s identity. Police have not said whether the earlier search near the 8000 block and the more recent Lake Terrace/Lake Oaks investigation are linked.
Next steps
Investigators said the scene remained active while detectives and the coroner’s office worked to piece together what happened. As is standard, officials are expected to release the victim’s name only after the coroner confirms the identity and relatives have been notified.
