FedEx is shutting down a Phoenix ship center this summer, cutting about 100 jobs and closing a longtime operation near 43rd Avenue and Indian School Road. The facility is expected to wind down in early August, which will shift where some west Phoenix customers pick up or drop off packages. For employees, the next two months are shaping up to be a tense transition while the company finalizes timelines and staffing plans.
According to 12News, Federal Express filed a WARN notice on Tuesday stating it will reduce its Phoenix workforce by roughly 100 employees and close the facility in early August. The filing notes that customers will still be able to drop off packages at the site through a FedEx Office store that will continue to operate there. The public notice serves as the formal trigger for the company’s plan to wind down ship center operations.
What FedEx Said
In a statement to 12News, a FedEx spokesperson said workers at the Phoenix facility were warned months ago that changes were coming. The company also said customers would still have local options for shipping and drop-offs even as the ship center winds down.
Part of a Wider Consolidation
The Phoenix move is one more step in FedEx’s yearslong Network 2.0 overhaul, a program that combines Express and Ground operations and has already led to dozens of station closures and staffing cuts. Industry outlet Supply Chain Dive has tracked scores of closures tied to the initiative as FedEx reshapes its footprint through 2027. Company leaders say the consolidation is aimed at eliminating overlapping routes and delivering long-term cost savings.
What the WARN Notice Means
The filing in Phoenix invokes federal layoff rules. The U.S. Department of Labor says most employers with 100 or more workers must provide at least 60 calendar days of written notice before a plant closing or mass layoff. That notice period is meant to give employees time to look for other work, seek training or connect with assistance programs, and it can affect eligibility for benefits and possible rehire. Employers that do not comply with WARN requirements can be held liable for back pay and benefits covering the notice period, according to the agency.
Other Recent Cuts
FedEx has been trimming staff in other parts of the country this year, including dozens of layoffs at a Menands, New York, ship center earlier this spring, as reported by the Times Union. Local and national reporting point to these reductions as part of the same consolidation push that outlets such as FedEx Axes Over 100 Jobs have been tracking. Taken together, the notices paint a picture of a strategic pullback that is leaving some metro areas with fewer standalone ship centers.
What to Watch Next
FedEx has not yet provided details about severance or possible reassignments for Phoenix employees beyond what is in the WARN filing, and company spokespeople have only said that workers received advance notice. Affected employees can seek state-level help with unemployment benefits, job searches and training referrals through the Arizona Department of Economic Security, which coordinates a range of employment and support services.
