An 18-year-old Indianapolis man is facing murder charges after what investigators describe as a gun trade gone bad at a northeast-side apartment complex, leaving a teenager dead and a neighborhood on edge. Newly released court filings, obtained by local media, outline digital breadcrumbs and forensic testing that investigators say connect a suspect to a firearm found near a playground. The documents add detail to a killing that has once again put youth gun violence in Indianapolis under the microscope.

Charging documents outline alleged trade and forensic trail

Court documents obtained by FOX59 state that 18-year-old Dwight Knox is charged with two counts of murder and one count of robbery resulting in serious bodily injury. Investigators reportedly found a single fired 9mm cartridge casing at the playground and say a gun belonging to the teen victim was recovered at the scene. According to the filings, DNA testing linked Knox to that firearm and to a sweatshirt.

The documents also state that Instagram messages show discussions about a gun trade, and that an associate told police a recent Uber ride included stops for a gun exchange and a marijuana transaction. A warrant was issued, and Knox is being held in the Marion County Jail on a no-bond hold, according to the filings.

Shooting at apartment playground left teen dead

IMPD officers were called to the 3900 block of Rue Rabelais around 7:19 p.m. on March 28 and found a juvenile male near a playground suffering from gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Riley Hospital and later pronounced dead, according to WRTV. Local reporting and family accounts identified the victim as 15-year-old Tre'Von Riggins and described him as a teen trying to turn his life around, per the Indianapolis Star.

Police told neighbors there was no known ongoing danger to the public as detectives worked the scene and continued their homicide investigation.

How detectives say they built the case

According to the court filings, detectives used a mix of Uber records, Indiana BMV data and surveillance video to track people allegedly tied to the incident. That work led to a search of a home on East Market Street on March 21, where four people, including Knox, were detained, the documents state.

Investigators also collected several pieces of clothing in the surrounding neighborhood that the filings link to the shooting. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will review the evidence while detectives continue to develop the case, according to the documents.

Neighborhood on edge as city confronts youth violence

The killing has amplified calls from neighbors for action and has added urgency to city efforts targeting teen-involved violence. Indianapolis officials have expanded youth mentoring programs and imposed curfews as part of a broader Youth Violence Reduction Initiative, WFYI reported.

Family members and residents have urged anyone with doorbell or other surveillance footage to share it with investigators as they work to piece together the full timeline. Tre'Von’s mother has spoken in local interviews about her grief and condemned what she has called the senselessness of the killing.

Anyone with information is asked to contact IMPD Homicide Detective Christopher Williams at 317-327-3475 or e-mail [email protected]. Tips can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana. The case remains under investigation, and officials say the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will determine whether to pursue any additional formal charges beyond those described in the filings.
