Thursday morning started with flashing blue lights in North Memphis, as police swarmed the Cavelier Court Apartments in the city’s Hollywood neighborhood after reports of gunfire.
Officers moved in around the area of Peres Avenue and North Merton Street, roping off sections of the complex while detectives walked the grounds and marked evidence. By later in the day, the active scene had been cleared, according to authorities, but the questions about what exactly happened were still hanging in the air.
Investigation underway
FOX13 Memphis reporters arrived to find a full-on police response and confirmed with the Memphis Police Department that officers were working a shooting investigation at the complex.
The station reported that it has reached out to MPD for basic details, including whether anyone was hurt and what may have sparked the gunfire, while multiple squad cars and investigators remained on site earlier in the day.
Past violence near Peres and Merton
The corner of Peres and Merton is no stranger to serious trouble. In 2024, the area was the scene of a deadly confrontation in which a man was killed, and a woman was wounded, a case highlighted in Hoodline’s coverage of a man killed, a woman injured in a 2024 shooting. Incidents like that have kept public safety squarely on the radar for neighbors and local officials.
What comes next
As of now, the Memphis Police Department has not released further information on Thursday’s shooting, including whether there were any injuries, suspects, or arrests. FOX13 Memphis reports that it has requested additional comment from the department.
Investigators are expected to continue canvassing the complex, checking for witnesses, and pulling whatever surveillance footage they can find as they work to piece together what unfolded inside the Hollywood apartment community.
