Gunfire tore through a Chester street Thursday evening, leaving three people wounded and rattling a neighborhood that had been hoping its recent calm would last. Emergency crews rushed the injured to local hospitals while officers locked down the area, collected shell casings and moved door to door looking for anyone who saw or heard something.
What happened
Police responded after reports of shots fired and found three victims who had been struck. Authorities have not released their names or conditions. According to NBC10 Philadelphia, investigators spent the night canvassing the neighborhood for surveillance footage and eyewitness accounts, and no arrests had been announced when the report was filed.
Chester's recent violence
The shooting lands in the middle of a rough stretch that city officials say has shaken residents after what had been a relatively quiet year. As reported by The Philadelphia Inquirer, two fatal shootings in late May marked part of an alarming uptick. In response, Mayor Stefan Roots called the recent violence "heartbreaking" and urged anyone who "knows something" to step up and help investigators.
Investigation ongoing
Chester police say the probe remains very much active and are asking anyone with video or information to contact detectives as they work to pin down suspects and a possible motive. NBC10 Philadelphia reported that officers continued canvassing the surrounding blocks, looking for camera footage and fresh tips that could break the case open.
