An 11-year-old boy wandering alone through a Doral apartment complex in search of food has led to child neglect and animal cruelty charges against his mother, along with an animal-welfare intervention, according to police. The child told officers he had been left overnight while his mother stayed at her boyfriend’s apartment and said he often split the family’s limited meals with the household dog. Authorities transported both children for medical checks and placed the dog in custody while the case moves forward.
Police: Boy Roamed Halls Because Kitchen Was Bare
Doral police identified the mother as 31-year-old Roxanabel Medinaleon and say officers found the boy walking inside the apartment complex because there was little food at home. Detectives told WSVN that the apartment was cluttered, the child’s bedroom had only a mattress on the floor, and kitchen knives sat unsecured on a counter within easy reach. Investigators also said the boy reported that he regularly went to the mother’s boyfriend’s apartment to get meals.

The two children, including a 4-month-old sibling, were taken to Nicklaus Children's Hospital for evaluation, and Miami-Dade Animal Services took custody of the family dog while detectives continued their investigation, according to WSVN. Medinaleon was later transported to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center to await further court proceedings.
