I-70 Horror Near Bates City As Mayview Woman Killed In Tractor-Trailer Crash

A 65-year-old woman from Mayview died Tuesday after her car slammed into the rear of a tractor-trailer on westbound Interstate 70 near Exit 31 in Lafayette County. The late-morning crash left both vehicles stopped in the right lane while first responders worked the scene, and westbound drivers were forced into detours for hours as the interstate stayed shut down.

According to KMMO, citing the Missouri State Highway Patrol, troopers got the first call about the wreck at around 11:40 a.m. Investigators say the Mayview driver hit the back of the towed unit of a Freightliner that was stopped in the lane because of traffic congestion near the exit. The Lafayette County deputy coroner pronounced the woman dead at 11:54 a.m. at the scene. The Freightliner’s driver, a 37-year-old man from Brooklyn, New York, was taken to Centerpoint Hospital in Independence with minor injuries.

According to MoDOT, the portion of I-70 east of I-470 through Lafayette County is part of a corridor re-evaluation that highlights both capacity and safety concerns.
