A 67-year-old Indiana University employee was arrested Monday after police say she pulled a handgun and pointed it at multiple bicyclists near the Bloomington campus, sending riders scrambling and triggering a fast response from law enforcement. Witnesses gave officers a license plate number, police tracked the suspect to her workplace, and she was taken into custody. No one was shot, and investigators recovered a firearm that they booked into evidence as the investigation continues.
What Police Say Happened
According to FOX59, Monroe County court documents identify the suspect as 67-year-old Lois Hugentober, also known as Lois Watson, and place the confrontation near the intersection of E. 2nd Street and College Avenue. Police allege Hugentober pulled a revolver with a laser sight and pointed it at multiple bicyclists, who took off. Witnesses passed along her license plate number, and investigators later recovered a Luger .22-caliber pistol from her purse.
Court paperwork cited by FOX59 shows she was charged with two counts of intimidation, a Level 5 felony, and two counts of pointing a firearm, a Class A misdemeanor. Online records indicate she posted a $500 cash bond. During questioning, officers reported that she became agitated, claimed the cyclists had surrounded her, and punched a wall in her supervisor's office hard enough to knock a clock down, according to the documents.
Campus Cycling And Safety Context
Indiana University in recent years has expanded bike infrastructure and programs. IU is designated a Gold Bicycle Friendly University and has rolled out a bike registration system to help recover stolen bikes, according to IU Today. Even so, high-profile safety incidents near campus have kept some students and residents on edge.
Local coverage has highlighted how quickly situations can escalate downtown. In late April, a shooting wounded multiple people and triggered an IU alert, as detailed in a late-night Bloomington shooting report. In the wake of the latest arrest, riders and neighbors said they want clearer messaging from both city and university authorities about what happens after tense encounters on campus-area streets.
Charges And Next Steps
Court records reviewed by FOX59 show Hugentober has an initial hearing scheduled for Friday and that she posted a $500 cash bond. The Monroe County Prosecutor’s Office will decide whether to file formal charges once investigators finish collecting witness statements and evidence.
Indiana University did not immediately provide a public comment to reporters. The university sometimes conducts an internal review when an employee is arrested, and residents say they will be watching to see whether charges move forward and whether IU updates employee training or reporting systems to help prevent similar confrontations in the future.
