A late-night crash turned a stretch of southbound Interstate 15 in Mira Mesa into a chaotic emergency scene, leaving at least one person dead and a vehicle in flames as crews shut down multiple lanes and fought to save a life.
Crash And Emergency Response
The California Highway Patrol told The San Diego Union‑Tribune that the crash was reported at about 10:27 PM yesterday on the southbound I‑15 just north of Carroll Canyon Drive. According to the paper, an officer arriving at the scene reported that CPR was being performed on someone and that the county medical examiner was called roughly 10 minutes later.
Witness Accounts And Fiery Scene
Witnesses told the paper that multiple vehicles were involved and that one car was fully engulfed in flames. The occupants managed to get out of the burning vehicle, one witness said, according to The San Diego Union‑Tribune. In the confusion that often follows a serious wreck, an officer at the scene later said only the burned vehicle was involved in the collision.
Traffic Fallout On A Packed Commute Corridor
The crash shut down at least three southbound lanes and quickly backed up traffic along the busy commute route. Similar fiery or fatal wrecks on stretches of I‑15 have led to lengthy closures and miles‑long jams in the past, as KGTV/10News has reported. The San Diego Association of Governments notes that I‑15 links Mira Mesa to major job centers and carries heavy commuter traffic, which means any major incident can ripple into long delays. SANDAG has tracked ongoing improvement projects along the corridor.
Investigation And Safety Reminder
The crash remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol, and authorities had not released the victim's identity as of Monday evening. Drivers approaching emergency scenes are reminded to follow California's "Slow Down, Move Over" law, which calls on motorists to change lanes if it is safe or reduce speed when passing responders, a message reinforced by Caltrans and state traffic officials.
