An 18-year-old woman walking near Lake Arlington late Sunday night fought off a male bicyclist who attacked her along the popular path, Arlington Heights police said. The incident happened around 11:15 p.m. in the area of Windsor Drive and Jonquil Circle. After breaking free, she flagged down a motorist and was taken for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Police are now asking anyone who saw anything to speak up.
Police describe the attack
According to ABC7 Chicago, the woman told officers a male bicyclist rode up to her and asked for her name. Police say he then pushed her to the ground and began choking her. She managed to fend him off, then flagged down a passing driver for help. Authorities say her injuries were non-life-threatening. The reported attack took place along the Lake Arlington loop, a roughly 1.96-mile walking and biking path that the Arlington Heights Park District says is used year-round by walkers, runners and cyclists. The park district lists paved paths, fishing piers and boat rentals among the amenities at the lakefront site. The location near Windsor Drive and Jonquil Circle sits on the south side of the park, near residential streets.
Police seeking tips and video
Arlington Heights police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or who has surveillance or cellphone video from the area, to call the department at 847-368-5300. Per the village's Connect Arlington Heights program, residents can register cameras and submit footage to help investigators. Police have not released additional suspect details and say the investigation is active.
