A late-night ride in Lombard ended in tragedy early Sunday when a motorcyclist was fatally injured in a crash at a busy suburban intersection.
Police said the collision, which involved a motorcycle and another vehicle, was reported at about 1:04 a.m. in the area of Finley Road and 22nd Street, according to NBC Chicago. The rider was rushed to a hospital in critical condition and later pronounced dead.
Lombard police said the investigation is ongoing and the crash scene remained under review on Sunday.
Major crash team called in
To piece together what happened on the darkened stretch of Finley, Lombard police called in the DuPage MERIT Major Crash Reconstruction Team for assistance, NBC Chicago reported. MERIT, short for Metropolitan Emergency Response and Investigations Team, provides major crash reconstruction and other specialized services to departments across DuPage County, according to Oak Brook.
The intersection of South Finley Road and West 22nd Street is no stranger to trouble. It has appeared in local police logs for prior crashes, according to the village’s records. The Lombard Police press log (PDF) lists earlier collisions in the same area.
As of Sunday afternoon, the rider had not yet been publicly identified, NBC Chicago reported. Lombard police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has information to contact the department as the investigation continues.
