Hidden GPS trackers tucked into pricey athleisure gear helped Cook County sheriff’s police trace roughly $3,300 in stolen Lululemon merchandise from the Magnificent Mile to a traffic stop miles away on the South Side, officials said. Deputies followed the signal down the Dan Ryan Expressway to the area of 79th Street and Halsted, where they pulled over a Toyota Corolla.
The passenger, identified as 22-year-old Tavieon Holman, was taken into custody, while the driver was released without charges. Authorities said the stolen clothing was recovered from the car and returned to the Lululemon store on North Michigan Avenue. Holman now faces a felony retail theft charge and remains behind bars because of outstanding Kane County warrants.
How investigators tracked the haul
According to Cook County sheriff’s police, several of the swiped items were outfitted with GPS tracking devices that started pinging as the merchandise moved south on the Dan Ryan before landing near 79th and Halsted. Deputies stopped three vehicles in the area and spotted Lululemon gear with security tags still attached inside a Toyota Corolla.
Investigators said the passenger matched store surveillance footage of the person who allegedly lifted the goods. The merchandise was seized and returned to the Magnificent Mile shop, according to FOX 32 Chicago.
Charges and court status
"Holman was charged with felony retail theft," FOX 32 Chicago reported, and a judge ordered him into the court’s pretrial electronic monitoring program. Authorities said he remained in custody due to two outstanding Kane County warrants for burglary and escape, and that he is being held at the Kane County Jail. The driver of the Corolla was released without charges, according to the same report.
A broader crackdown
The bust folds into a wider crackdown by Cook County’s Organized Retail Crime Task Force, which has leaned heavily on data-driven tactics and technology to go after theft crews. The unit has paired tracking devices with undercover buys and search warrants to claw back stolen merchandise.
ABC7 Chicago’s I-Team reported the task force has recovered more than $5 million in suspected stolen goods over the past two years and credited tools like trackers with helping crack several cases. Coverage of other recent Lululemon incidents has shown similar patterns of high-dollar thefts, backing up why retailers and law enforcement are zeroing in on coordinated enforcement efforts; see related reporting on a Lululemon haul stuffed in a Chicago van for additional background.
Where it happened
The Lululemon hit in this case is the Magnificent Mile location at 900 N. Michigan Ave., a high-traffic shopping destination that has been targeted in other recent thefts, officials noted. Store listings confirm the address and the shop’s place along the Mag Mile, as listed by Lululemon, and investigators said the recovered items were routed back to that location.
Authorities are asking anyone with information about this arrest or related retail thefts to contact Cook County sheriff’s police, according to reporting.
