A Miami man was arrested Monday, June 22, after what police say was a hit-and-run crash that left a scooter rider in critical condition. The driver is facing a felony charge for allegedly leaving the scene of a crash that resulted in serious bodily injury.

Police: Driver Charged After Collision At NW 37th Avenue And 36th Street

Stephen Campos, 45, was charged with leaving the scene of a crash with serious bodily injury, according to NBC 6 South Florida. Officers responded to the intersection of Northwest 37th Avenue and 36th Street after reports that a Lexus had struck a person riding an electric stand-up scooter. The injured rider was taken to a hospital in critical condition, the outlet reported.

What The Charge Could Carry

Under Florida law, leaving the scene of a crash that causes serious bodily injury is a second-degree felony that can carry up to 15 years in prison, license revocation and restitution. The statute also lists scooter riders among “vulnerable road users,” which can affect sentencing and restitution orders. Per Florida Statutes §316.027, courts may also require victim restitution and other penalties when a driver willfully flees a crash involving injuries.

How Police Say The Arrest Unfolded

The arrest report states that Campos initially drove away from the scene but later came back after his wife drove him back and he flagged down an officer. He told police his windshield had shattered and that he believed someone had thrown a rock at his car, a story he repeated at the Miami Police station before officers took him into custody, according to NBC 6 South Florida.

Investigation Ongoing

Authorities have not released additional details about the victim, and the investigation remains active. Miami Police have not announced any further charges as detectives continue to work the case.
