Alamo Drafthouse is handing over the New Mission marquee to one of Hollywood’s biggest names. The San Francisco theater will be officially renamed the Christopher Nolan Cinema, a makeover timed to the building’s 110th year that comes with premium large-format screenings and a special 70mm event later in 2026. The rebrand gives one of the Mission District’s oldest movie houses a fresh public identity just as Nolan gears up for a major return to theaters.
According to a news release reported by The Mercury News, Alamo says the new name honors Nolan’s “commitment to film preservation, theatrical exhibition and large-format presentation.” Nolan called the dedication a thrill beyond words and said he was grateful to Alamo Drafthouse Cinema for their passion and commitment, per the same report.
Renovation For The Theater's 110th
The New Mission is in the middle of a multistage upgrade that Alamo has synced with the venue’s 110th anniversary. The work includes new recliner seating, updated carpeting, and a revamp of the kitchen and beer lines, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The Chronicle reports that construction will be staggered so the five-screen theater can stay open for many of its regular series while the overhaul plays out around them.
70mm Screenings And The Odyssey
Alamo says it will throw a dedicated 70mm screening event to mark the Nolan rename and has already started selling tickets for premium large-format showings of Nolan’s The Odyssey, according to The Mercury News. The Odyssey is set to open on July 17, and IMAX and other trade outlets reported that select IMAX 70mm screenings and presales went live well ahead of the wide release. Variety noted that early demand for those 70mm showings was brisk.
Alamo's Filmmaker Dedications
Alamo has a track record of putting directors’ names on its locations and screens, including a Spike Lee dedication at its Downtown Brooklyn multiplex that drew coverage from local and industry press. Yahoo Entertainment reported on that Brooklyn ceremony, and the Christopher Nolan Cinema announcement signals Alamo’s ongoing strategy of aligning key venues with director-focused programming.
