San Francisco’s Organized Retail Crime (ORC) Task Force says it has arrested 35 people in a run of enforcement actions in May and June, recovering more than $8,000 in stolen merchandise. The cases span the retail theft pipeline, from alleged street-level boosters and fencers who resell stolen goods to suspects tied to armed robberies and a violent bus assault.
What the police say
According to the San Francisco Police Department, four separate enforcement operations on the 700 block of Mission Street in May and June resulted in 29 arrests of people identified as boosters or fences. The department says the ORC Task Force is coordinating with the ORC vertical prosecutor in the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office as investigators assemble cases targeting alleged fences and repeat offenders.
Search warrant, trackers and a bus assault
In one case, a burglary victim spotted their stolen property listed for sale online, which prompted investigators to serve a search warrant on May 14 at a residence in Bay Point. Officers say they recovered three high-value purses worth about $8,400, which were later returned to the victim.
Another investigation stemmed from a May 23 theft at a Walgreens on the 300 block of Montgomery Street. Police say tracker-enabled merchandise helped guide officers to the area of Market and 8th Streets, where they seized more than $600 in suspected stolen goods and arrested two people. One of the suspects was allegedly carrying a concealed, loaded firearm.
On May 30, officers responded to what they describe as a vicious assault and attempted robbery on a bus on the 4500-block of Mission Street. Police arrested three suspects shortly after the attack and later located a fourth alleged accomplice. Multiple felony charges are pending, according to the department’s news release.
Where this fits in the bigger picture
The ORC Task Force activity lands at a time when retailers across the country continue to report more theft and on-site threats. A joint study from the National Retail Federation and the Loss Prevention Research Council found shoplifting incidents and threats increased in 2024.
Closer to home, recent Hoodline coverage shows how serial theft cases are pieced together, then funneled to a vertical prosecutor in the district attorney’s office for follow-through.
