A Friday afternoon outing along Lake Pontchartrain took a grim turn when a passerby spotted a person in the water near the 8000 block of Lakeshore Drive, according to New Orleans police. Officers were dispatched shortly before 1 p.m. and pulled the individual from the lake.
The Orleans Parish Coroner's Office is expected to perform an autopsy to determine how the person died. The office will release the name once relatives have been notified.
Recovery Near Lakeshore Drive
According to WWLTV, officers were called to the lakefront after a passerby reported seeing a body in the water, and recovery crews later located the person near the 8000 block of Lakeshore Drive.
The outlet reports that authorities had already been searching the west end of the lake after someone told dispatchers that a person had jumped into the water and never resurfaced.
Next Steps From the Coroner
"The Orleans Parish Coroner's Office will determine the cause of death following an autopsy," the report notes, and officials say the recovered person's identity will be released after family members are notified.
