A Sunday crash in North Miami Beach left a pedestrian badly hurt and a driver facing felony charges after police say she hit a person, drove off, and was later tracked down at home.
According to investigators, a pedestrian suffered serious injuries after being struck by a car in North Miami Beach. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue took the victim to Aventura Hospital with a head laceration and other apparent serious injuries. Officers later arrested a 32-year-old woman in connection with the crash, and she appeared in court the following day.
Police were called to the area of Northeast 167th Street and Northeast Eighth Avenue after witnesses reported a hit-and-run involving a pedestrian, according to an arrest report. One witness snapped a photo of the fleeing vehicle’s license plate and described the driver as a young woman in a black T-shirt. Investigators traced a white Kia to a residence on Northeast 174th Street and found damage that they say matched the collision.
Officers identified the driver as 32-year-old Shannon Mackey, took her into custody, and charged her with leaving the scene of a crash involving serious bodily injury, knowingly driving with a suspended license, and misrepresenting proof of insurance. A judge set her bond at $7,500, according to WSVN.
Legal consequences
Under Florida law, leaving the scene of a crash that results in serious bodily injury is treated as a felony. Florida Statute 316.027 classifies this offense as a second-degree felony, and state sentencing rules allow penalties of up to 15 years in prison at that level. The law also allows for driver’s license suspension or revocation for those convicted of these offenses, which in some cases can range from one to five years, depending on the charges. See Florida Statute 316.027 and Florida sentencing laws.
What’s next
Mackey appeared in bond court on Monday, where a judge found probable cause and set her bond at $7,500, officials said. Police say she was advised of her Miranda rights and spoke with officers before being booked.
The North Miami Beach Police Department continues to investigate. Prosecutors will decide whether to file formal charges ahead of any arraignment, and the case will move through the county courts, according to WSVN.
The investigation remains active, and this story will be updated as court filings or official statements become available.
