A Richmond man is facing a stack of felony charges after police say he kicked in a door, forced his way into a Hunt Street house and abducted his girlfriend during a confrontation on Wednesday. Investigators arrested 31-year-old Jesse Maiden, and prosecutors charged him the next day in Wayne Superior Court 2 with burglary, kidnapping, criminal confinement, intimidation and domestic battery.
Arrest and charges
According to the Palladium-Item, the incident unfolded when Maiden confronted the woman at a friend's Hunt Street home. Police say he pushed in windows and then kicked in a door before allegedly taking her away from the residence. Officers later booked Maiden on the listed counts, and court paperwork was filed in Wayne Superior Court 2, the outlet reported.
Previous contacts with police
Earlier this spring, Maiden was arrested on theft-related counts after investigators linked him to a series of local thefts. Coverage by WHIO reports he was taken into custody May 3 near Holsapple Road on an outstanding warrant. It is not clear whether that earlier case has any connection to the latest allegations.
Holding and next steps
Per the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, the county detention center and booking operations are located at 200 E. Main St. in Richmond. The Palladium-Item reported Maiden was arraigned Thursday in Wayne Superior Court 2, and prosecutors are expected to review the evidence and determine whether to pursue any additional charges as the investigation continues.
Legal note
Under Indiana law, kidnapping and criminal confinement are treated as serious felonies, and burglary is defined as a Level 5 felony when someone breaks and enters with the intent to commit a theft or other felony. Statutory definitions and potential penalties are outlined in Indiana Code § 35-43-2-1 on burglary and Indiana Code § 35-42-3-2 on kidnapping, as compiled by Justia.
