A pre-dawn burst of gunfire shattered the quiet of downtown Indianapolis on Friday, leaving a woman fighting for her life after a shooting at an apartment building, authorities said.
Officers responded to the 900 block of Fort Wayne Avenue around 6:15 a.m., where they found the woman with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds. She was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition, according to WRTV.
Police response and investigation
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were dispatched to the scene after reports of a shooting at the apartment complex. Investigators arrived to find the victim inside the building and began canvassing the area for witnesses and evidence, WRTV reported.
Police have described the shooting as an isolated incident, and the case remains under investigation, according to FOX59. For downtown residents waking up to flashing lights and crime-scene tape, officers have not indicated any broader threat to the public.
Local outlets confirm scene details
WRTV also reported that the woman was transported from the scene in critical condition after officers and medics responded to the call.
Officials have not released any suspect information and have not provided a possible motive, the station added. That leaves neighbors with more questions than answers as detectives work to piece together what led up to the early-morning violence.
What downtown residents should know
Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact IMPD as the investigation continues. Authorities have not said whether any charges have been filed.
Detectives plan to share additional details as they develop leads and confirm information, according to FOX59.
