An early morning mugging near the Chicago lakefront turned even more tense when a shot was fired during the stickup, rattling part of the Lincoln Park neighborhood but leaving no one injured.
Police said a 25-year-old man was robbed just before 3:30 a.m. Sunday on the 2400 block of North DuSable Lake Shore Drive. Area detectives have opened an investigation.
According to CBS Chicago, the victim was outside when five suspects approached him, forcibly robbed him, and then one member of the group fired a single round. The shot did not hit anyone. Police have not released descriptions of the suspects and no arrests had been announced.
The holdup unfolded on a stretch of the North Side that has seen occasional late-night robberies and so-called robbery crews targeting people on foot or in small groups, with surveillance footage and community alerts helping drive recent investigations, NBC Chicago reported. Nearby residents and business owners have been pressing for more visible patrols after other overnight robberies in recent months.
Police response
Area detectives are handling the case and are asking anyone with information or video from the vicinity to contact them, according to CBS Chicago. Investigators reiterated that the probe remains active and that they have not yet put out any suspect descriptions.
How neighbors can help
Officers routinely urge witnesses to share security footage or tips either directly with detectives or through the department’s anonymous online portal, since those details can quickly move a case forward. In similar incidents, FOX 32 Chicago has spotlighted community alerts and police tip lines as key tools for tracking robbery crews.
Chicago police did not immediately release more information about a possible motive or whether any stolen items were recovered, and detectives continue canvassing the area. This story will be updated if authorities provide additional details.
