Gunfire brought several westbound lanes of the Eisenhower Expressway to a halt in Chicago's Garfield Park neighborhood early Friday, tangling pre-dawn traffic and drawing a heavy response from state troopers. Illinois State Police said shots were fired just before 2:40 a.m., prompting lane closures near the Kostner Avenue exit while investigators worked the scene. Authorities did not immediately say whether anyone was injured, and all lanes were back open shortly after 5:20 a.m.
According to CBS Chicago, someone inside a white Chevrolet Impala opened fire on a Jeep SUV in the westbound lanes near Kostner. State police are asking anyone with information or any kind of video from the area to call 847-294-4400 as the investigation continues.
Expressway Has Seen Similar Disruptions
The Eisenhower has not exactly been quiet in recent months. A fatal early-morning crash near the same Kostner exit last November shut down traffic, and the Sun-Times has archived earlier cases of shots fired and lane closures on I-290. Those past incidents show how a single off-hours disruption on the Eisenhower can quickly spill over onto commute routes and nearby neighborhood streets.
Investigators Seeking Witnesses
