A rural stretch of Texas Pike just north of Manhattan Road turned into a crime scene Friday as an Owen County deputy was flown to a hospital after what officials are calling a “criminal incident.” The sheriff’s office quickly warned nearby residents to lock their doors, stay away from the area and call 911 if they spotted anyone suspicious. Authorities have not yet released the deputy’s name or said anything publicly about possible suspects.
According to FOX59, Indiana State Police confirmed that the deputy was airlifted for medical treatment and that investigators remained on scene into the evening. The outlet reports that the Owen County Sheriff’s Office also took to Facebook to urge neighbors to secure their homes and report anything out of the ordinary, while local roads around the scene were temporarily restricted as multiple agencies responded.
Small County, Big Law Enforcement Presence
For a county better known for quiet country roads than major police activity, the heavy law enforcement presence stood out. The Owen County Sheriff’s Department has been leaning into regional cooperation and training in recent months, including the dedication of a new 12-lane shooting range in early June to support deputies and neighboring agencies. The Owen News reports that the range is intended to help local teams get ready for complex, fast-moving situations like the one that unfolded on Texas Pike.
Investigation Still Under Wraps
State police are leading the investigation alongside Owen County deputies, but so far they are keeping details close to the vest. Officials have not released information on the deputy’s condition, potential suspects or any charges. FOX59 reported that detectives are asking residents to stay alert and to contact 911 with any tips. This story will be updated as authorities provide more information.
