Detectives are working a domestic-violence homicide case in rural Wimer after a 59-year-old woman was found shot on Saturday. The victim has been identified as Onalea Clay of Wimer. An 80-year-old man, named by the sheriff's office as Norman Henry Chapman, is in custody and has been charged with second-degree murder.
Sheriff's Office Releases Initial Details
According to a Facebook post from the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, Emergency Communications of Southern Oregon received a 911 call on Saturday reporting that a man had shot a woman during a domestic altercation. Deputies went to a residence in the 1900 block of Sykes Creek Road in Wimer, where they took Chapman into custody without incident.
The sheriff's office reports that Chapman was medically cleared for confinement at a local hospital, then lodged in the Jackson County Jail. Authorities say next-of-kin have been notified, and the case is being tracked as JCSO case 26-3265.
Major Assault And Death Investigation Unit Assists
The sheriff said detectives were backed up by the Jackson County Major Assault and Death Investigation Unit (MADIU), the multi-agency team that comes together for serious assaults and homicides. The Jackson County District Attorney's Office notes that MADIU typically includes detectives from the Oregon State Police, the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, the Medford Police Department, Central Point Police and the Ashland Police Department, among others.
Investigators Processing The Scene
Oregon State Police personnel and local partner agencies assisted at the scene, and the sheriff reported that evidence was processed by the Oregon State Police forensics lab. Detectives and assisting agencies have been conducting interviews and collecting physical evidence as they work to pin down the sequence of events around the shooting.
Charge And Legal Process
Chapman is charged with murder in the second degree, a felony defined under Oregon law per Justia, which outlines criminal homicides that lack the aggravating factors for aggravated murder. Under state statutes the offense carries severe penalties, and prosecution will be handled by the Jackson County District Attorney's Office as detectives prepare the case for court.
What Comes Next
The investigation remains active while MADIU detectives and partner agencies follow up on leads and additional evidence. Officials have not released a motive and have not publicly discussed what may have led up to the shooting. Authorities are asking that anyone connected to the case allow investigators and prosecutors to complete their review of the charging documents and other materials as the legal process moves forward.
