A brush fire flared up just off Interstate 15 in American Fork on Tuesday evening, throwing up thick smoke over the freeway and pulling multiple fire units into a tense roadside response. Evening commuters reported seeing smoke and occasional flames near the Pioneer Crossing and Main Street exits as traffic stacked up in the corridor. Firefighters pushed into the brush to keep the flames from creeping toward the highway.
According to FOX 13 News, UDOT traffic cameras showed smoke, smoldering, and occasional flare-ups near Pioneer Crossing and Main Street while crews worked the scene. The station noted that no official details on the fire or its impact on traffic were immediately available as responders focused on containment.
Where It Is Burning
The blaze was reported along the I8 corridor just west of American Fork's diverging-diamond interchange at Pioneer Crossing and Main Street. Per UDOT, Pioneer Crossing is State Route 145, a major connector that feeds traffic onto I8 in northwest Utah County. Fire crews concentrated on the brush immediately adjacent to the highway to keep the flames away from the roadway.
Regional Fire Conditions
The roadside fire comes during a stretch of heightened wildfire activity across Utah, including the Tower Fire in Millard County that has grown to roughly 1,360 acres and affected traffic near I8, according to Utah Fire Info. State fire officials have warned that warm, dry, and gusty conditions this week could let even relatively small fires spread more quickly than usual.
Travel and Safety
With smoke drifting over the freeway, drivers in the area should be ready for reduced visibility and slower traffic. Officials recommend steering clear of the corridor if possible and using extra caution when passing through. Motorists can check live camera feeds and lane-status updates on the UDOT traffic site, and are urged to follow instructions from emergency personnel on the ground. As FOX 13 News reported, there was no immediate word on lane closures when crews first arrived.
