Overnight flames lit up the hills above Lake Point and Stockton this week, and by sunrise, a 39-year-old Stockton-area man was in handcuffs, accused of setting them. The Tooele County Sheriff's Office says several wildfires flared near homes, towers, and roads before crews managed to knock them down in the pre-dawn hours, while investigators began reconstructing the night through security footage and witness accounts.
Deputies identified the suspect as 39-year-old Timothy Devone West and booked him into the Tooele County Detention Center, where they say he is being held without bail. According to the sheriff's office, the Lake Point fire had two separate ignition points, and another blaze was reported near Droubay Road and Foothill Drive. Those fires briefly threatened structures and led to at least one evacuation. West now faces three counts of arson, one count of causing a catastrophe, and one count of damaging a jail, according to KUTV.
Investigators say they tied West to the scene with a mix of technology and old-fashioned neighborhood chatter. Surveillance video, witness statements, and a FLOCK traffic camera placed him in the area as the fires kicked off, and neighbors told reporters they saw a man with a headlamp sprinting through the dark and knocking on doors to warn people. When West was booked into jail, officers noted a black-and-white residue on his boots that they said appeared consistent with soot, as reported by FOX13.
What Burned And Why Crews Struggled
The largest blaze tore across South Mountain, where officials mapped the main fire at roughly 1,800 acres. Gusty winds turned the overnight fight into a slog. KSL reports that wind gusts up to 55 mph and low humidity helped the flames run, prompting mutual aid from nearby fire districts and Hill Air Force Base as crews worked to shield communications towers and homes on the edge of the burn.
Legal History And Records
Court records show this is not West's first time facing arson charges. In 2015, he pleaded guilty to third-degree felony arson in connection with a 2014 wildfire in the Stockton area and received concurrent sentences, according to the documents. Earlier reporting cited by FOX13 notes that investigators in that earlier case said West had previously volunteered as a firefighter and is the son of a former Stockton fire chief, a detail that adds an extra twist to an already tense local story.
How Residents Can Help
The Tooele County Sheriff's Office is urging residents and business owners in Stockton and Lake Point to comb through doorbell video, dashcam clips, and security feeds for anything that might help fill in the gaps. Anyone with potentially useful footage or information is asked to contact Tooele County Dispatch at (435) 882-5600. Officials told KUTV that public tips and recordings are often crucial in building a complete picture in cases like this.
The investigation is still active, and prosecutors have not announced any additional charges. Residents in the area are being advised to keep an eye on official emergency channels for updated information on fire conditions and any new evacuation instructions.
