A fatal argument inside a St. George home left a 56-year-old man dead. Deputies say a New Orleans suspect fled the scene in a stolen car but was tracked across parish lines and arrested before sunrise.
What Happened at the Home
Deputies say they were called around 8 p.m. Friday, June 5, to a home on Tiger Bend Road near 7 Pines Avenue after reports of a shooting, according to WBRZ. Investigators identified the victim as 56-year-old Alex Wilson, who was taken to a hospital and later died from his injuries. The East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office told the station that a verbal argument came first, and that the suspect allegedly pulled a handgun and fired multiple times.
How Police Tracked and Captured the Suspect
Detectives say the gunman took off in a stolen vehicle that was later traced to LaPlace, where surveillance was set up on both the car and an apartment tied to the suspect, as reported by WAFB. The St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff's Office SWAT team executed a search warrant and took 44-year-old Marcus Jackson into custody, and authorities say they recovered the suspected murder weapon. Investigators say Jackson later admitted to shooting Wilson after the argument.
Charges and Booking
Jackson is facing charges that include second-degree murder, illegal use of weapons or dangerous instrumentalities, and auto theft, according to WBRZ. The St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff's Office highlighted the arrest on social media, with a reel showing SWAT bringing the suspect into custody shortly after 3:00 a.m. on June 6, according to the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff's Office. Authorities say Jackson will be transported to East Baton Rouge Parish to be booked while the investigation continues.
Legal Implications
Second-degree murder is defined under La. R.S. 14:30.1, which prescribes life imprisonment at hard labor without benefit of parole, probation, or suspension of sentence for those convicted. The full statutory language is available from the Louisiana Legislature. Prosecutors must still file formal charges and present evidence in court, and investigators say the case remains active as detectives follow leads and collect evidence.
