A Saturday night at the University of Illinois Chicago turned tense after a hazardous-material incident inside a building along West Taylor Street prompted a campuswide alert and an order to steer clear of the area.
The alert instructed students, faculty and staff on campus to follow directions from officials and told anyone off campus to avoid the affected stretch while emergency crews moved in to secure the scene.
According to NBC Chicago, the spill was reported in the 800 block of West Taylor Street. The building involved houses several laboratories and department offices, including the Sustainable Energy Research Laboratory and UIC’s Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, which lists its campus location at 842 W. Taylor St. on the UIC Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering site.
Response From Crews And Campus Safety Offices
Hazardous-material incidents at UIC are coordinated through the university’s Environmental Health and Safety office and the Office of Preparedness and Response, which also operate the UIC Alert emergency notification system, according to UIC Environmental Health and Safety. Those offices advise following all official instructions, avoiding the scene, and calling campus emergency numbers if you were in or near the affected area.
Per NBC Chicago, the Chicago Fire Department reported that crews suspected a leaking propane tank inside the building and moved the cylinder outside for inspection. Firefighters later determined there was no active leak, declared the situation under control at about 7:38 p.m., and officials said no injuries were reported as regular campus operations resumed.
Why This Matters
UIC and UI Health have dealt with similar lab-related safety alerts recently; a chemical leak at a UI Health laboratory in April triggered a campus warning, as reported by CBS Chicago. Incidents like these highlight why the university maintains 24/7 emergency support and hazmat-trained response teams for its research facilities.
Students and staff are urged to keep an eye on UIC Alert messages and the university’s emergency webpages for any updates. The Office of Preparedness and Response provides detailed guidance on how alerts are delivered and what to do during hazardous-material incidents, according to the UIC Office of Preparedness. Anyone with questions or safety concerns can contact UIC Environmental Health and Safety’s 24-hour line at 312-996-SAFE (7233).
