Late Thursday night in west Phoenix, a suspected impaired driver blew through a red light at a busy intersection and slammed into another car, killing a 43-year-old woman and injuring two others, according to police.
The collision happened just before 11 p.m. at 59th Avenue and McDowell Road. Investigators say a black pickup truck ran the red light at a high rate of speed and crashed into a white passenger car, sending the smaller vehicle careening into a nearby business.
The driver of the white sedan, 43-year-old Cecilia Cisneros Cuadros, was rushed to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. A 20-year-old passenger in her car was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, while the 21-year-old driver of the pickup was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to reporting by FOX 10 Phoenix.
"Witnesses reported a black pick-up truck was traveling [at] a high rate of speed and failed to stop for the red light," responding Phoenix officers wrote in a statement published by FOX 10 Phoenix. Police say the pickup driver showed signs of impairment. The driver’s name has not yet been released.
Phoenix police say the pickup driver is expected to face charges once he is released from medical custody. Detectives are still working the case, processing the crash scene and gathering additional witness statements.
