A 22-year-old man died after a single-vehicle crash on Monday afternoon at the busy intersection of 8th Avenue South and Wedgewood Avenue in Nashville, turning an ordinary day into a fatal scene. His car left the roadway and slammed into a light pole, and first responders rushed him to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he later died. Metro Nashville Police Department has opened an investigation into what led up to the wreck.
According to WSMV, police said the driver was traveling north on 8th Avenue South when his vehicle veered off the road and hit the light post. Officers are working to notify the man's family, and the Medical Examiner's Office will conduct toxicology testing to help determine whether impairment played any role in the crash.
8th Avenue South Has Been Under Safety Review
The area around 8th Avenue South and Wedgewood has not been flying under the radar. It has been included in the city's planning and safety work for several years as part of the 8th Avenue South Multimodal Study. That study reviews crash patterns and speed data along the corridor and lays out possible signal changes and lane adjustments aimed at cutting down on collisions, according to Metro Nashville Planning.

Metro Nashville Police Department investigators are still piecing together what caused the driver to lose control before the car left the roadway and struck the pole, and they plan to release additional details as they become available, WSMV reports. Authorities are coordinating with the Medical Examiner's Office on toxicology testing that could clarify whether impairment was a factor.
