A pre-dawn wreck on Brinker Road in Barrington Hills left one person dead and sent two others to the hospital early Saturday, authorities said, after a high-speed single-vehicle crash that shut down the rural roadway for hours.
Emergency crews were called out shortly after 2:20 a.m. and stayed on scene through the morning, working around crumpled metal and scattered debris while investigators documented the damage. Neighbors woke up to a packed emergency response and a long closure that backed up traffic across the usually quiet stretch of countryside.
According to Chicago Tribune, a blue Mercedes SUV heading north on Brinker ran off the road near Hills and Dales Road, slammed into several trees and rolled an estimated 400 feet. Homeowners told the paper the impact toppled a large oak and was violent enough that the SUV's engine and transmission were torn from the vehicle and left on the ground. First responders had to cut two occupants free, and officers immediately began life-saving measures, but one person was pronounced dead at the scene.

Homeowner Zach Swiatek, who saw the aftermath, told Chicago Tribune that "for a single-car crash, that was pretty horrific" and added that "they had to be traveling at a high rate of speed because they drove through a tree and knocked it over." His description lined up with what officers found when they arrived.

Barrington Hills police, working with the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team, said early findings indicate speed was a contributing factor, according to Daily Herald.
