A trust tied to billionaire David Cotton has unloaded its oceanfront Hillsboro Beach estate for $41 million, handing the tiny Broward town another luxury-sale shocker. The buyer is Mason Slaine, a local media and technology investor, and the property comes with the kind of two-sided water access that makes Hillsboro Mile live up to its Millionaires’ Mile nickname.

The Wednesday deal was first reported by the South Florida Business Journal, which identified the property as 1105 and 1107 Hillsboro Mile. Cotton is the former chairman and CEO of Meridian Health Plans, the Detroit-based health insurer his family sold to WellCare in a multibillion-dollar deal, while Slaine was identified as the buyer.

Public listing records for the 1107 portion describe a roughly 10,101-square-foot, seven-bedroom home on 1.38 acres, with about 140 feet of frontage on both the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway. The property also features a pool and spa, private beach access, a dock and an eight-car garage, according to Redfin’s listing data.

Hillsboro Beach Keeps Racking Up Trophy Sales

Hillsboro Beach is a roughly three-mile barrier-island town squeezed between Deerfield Beach and Pompano Beach, with most of its big-ticket real estate lined along Hillsboro Mile. Recent sales have pushed the quiet enclave into the same conversation as South Florida’s better-known luxury markets, with Realtor.com reporting that top estates there have been selling from roughly $16 million to more than $46 million.

The latest sale follows a $36.45 million ocean-to-Intracoastal compound deal reported in January. Mansion Global noted that the earlier transaction was Hillsboro Beach’s most expensive sale since the Versailles-style Playa Vista Isle sold at auction for about $42.5 million in 2019, putting Cotton’s former estate firmly in the town’s uppermost price bracket.

The Buyer Brings A Media And Technology Résumé

Slaine’s background is unusually aligned with the property’s buyer profile. According to EQT, he has invested in information, software and media businesses, served as chair and co-investor in FT Media Holdings before its acquisition by Gannett, and remains involved with several technology and entertainment companies.

For Hillsboro Beach, the $41 million transfer is another reminder that the town’s selling point is not a bustling downtown or a celebrity-packed social scene. It is privacy, direct water access and enough land to make an oceanfront home feel like its own little kingdom — provided the buyer has $41 million handy.
